使用过去完成时的几种情况
by+表示过去的时间
By three o'clock yesterday afternoon we had finished the work.
有when,before,after引导的时间状语从句的句子中
Mr.Wang had taught in that school for 20 year before he came here.
it was+一段时间+since 引导的时间状语从句
It's was 5 years since he had come here.
it was+the+序数词+time that 从句中
It was the second time that he had visited the city.
表示未曾实现的希望、打算、计划、意图
I had meant to see you,but it was too late.
在no sooner-than...,hardly...when...结构中than 和when 后的从句用一般过去时，主句则使用完成时。
He had hardly reached there when it began to snow.
8.The tramp,a poor,homeless man with a moustache,wore large trousers,worn-out shoes and a small round black hat.

hat 前有三个形容词修饰，形容词的排列顺序是：限定词、描绘性形容词、颜色、国籍、材料、用途或出处+名词

a little white wooden house
一块红色的中国造羊毛地毯
a red Chinese woollen carpet.
9.He walked around stiffly carring a walking stick.
walking stick 中walking 作其前置定语，动名词，表示所修饰动词的用途
a swimming cap(=a cap which is used for swimmiing),a reading room
单个现在分词也作前置定语，表示一个正在进行的动作。
a sleeping boy(=a boy who is sleeping)
10.This character was a social failure.
句子中failure 是可数名词，英语中有一些抽象名词当表示具体的人或事时，特别是名词前面有形容词修饰时，就成了可数名词。如：
experience,difficulty,beauty,danger,surprise,cold,failure,success等
He answered in surprise.
It was a great surprise that he suddenly appeared on a rainy night.
Failure is the mother of success.
The concert was a great success.
11.They are so hungry that they try boiling a pair of leather shoes for their dinner.
try doing sth.试着做某事
try to do sth.尽力做某事
try on 试穿
Try on these shoes and see if they fit you.
try n.尝试，努力
Let me have another try at it.
12.Charlie first picks out the laces and eats them as if they were spaghetti.
pick out 选出，挑出；辨别出；弄清楚
We succeeded in picking out its meaning.
I picked out her face in the crowd.
as if 引导的方式状语从句或表语从句的内容有时与事实相反，这时，从句中需用虚拟语气。
He talks to me like as if he were my father.
He looks as if he had mey a ghost.
