Pre-reading and Reading(1)
1.As Victor Hugo once said,"Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face".
as 引导非限制性定语从句指代整个句子的内容，它的位置比较灵活，可放在句首也可放在句尾，意思是“正如，正像”；which也可以引导非限制性定语从句指代整个句子的内容，但只能放在句尾，意思是“这，这一点”。
As all his friends agree,he was warm-hearted,loving and generous.
Th poor man sold his only watch,which surprised me very much.
2.And up to now nobady has been able to do this better than Charlie Chaplin.
up to now=up till now=so far
到目前为止，多用于现在完成时；类似的时间状语还有：
Since then,since,for in the past/last few (years)以及句型It is the +序数词+that 从句（从句中谓语动词用现在完成时）
They have raised more than on million yuan for the project up till now.
--nowbady has been able to do this better than Charlie chaplin.
形容词或副词的比较级用于否定句中时，往往表示肯定意义。
I have never seen a more interesting book.
I can't agree more.

3.He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed...
at a time 一次，每次
at one time 一度，曾经
They sent their son at college 300 yuan at a time.
At one time ,the boy wanted to steal money from the old man.
for a time 好一阵子
for the time 暂时
What's the time?几点了？
How is the time ?现在还剩多少时间？
at this time 现在，就在此时
at the time （仅表过去）当时
I don't know where he is at this time.
I warned you at the time that it was dangerous.
it is time+不定式    是该干...的时候了
it is (high)time+that从句中谓语动词用过去时或should do,但should 不省略
It was time for him to be off.
It is high time that you went(should go)to bed.
其它与time 有关的结构的用法
have a good/hard time doing sth.
They had a hare time going there.
4.So they could feel more content with their lives.
content 在句中作形容词用 意思是：满意的，满足的
be content with  对...满意
be content to do sth=be willing to do
sth=be ready to do sth    乐意做
content 不能做定语，不能说a content smile 而应该说a contented smile(满意的微笑）
contented 也是形容词，作表语时与content 同意，也可作定语   意思是：知足的，满意的
content vt.使满足，使满意
content oneself with    满足于
John contented himself with two glasses of beer.
Nothing will ever content him.
content n.目录（常用复数），书、文章等的内容、容量，含量，所容纳的东西（只用复数）
You'd better have a look at the content of a book before buying it.
I don't like the content of the book.
Show me the contents of your bag.
5.Not that Charlie's on life was easy.
not that 并非，并不是说（对上面所说的内容进行补充说明，以免引起误会）
Not that I hate the work,I'm not strong enough for it.
not that---but(that)   不是...而是....
Not that I don't want to go home,but(that)I have lots of work to do.
6.Unfortunately his father died,leaving the family even worse off.
leaving the family even worse off
是分词短语在句子中做结果状语（表示自然发生的结果）
Lots of good land has gone with them,leaving only sand.
The child slipped and fell,hitting his head against the door.
不定式作状语表示结果时，指出乎意料的结果。
He hurried to the station,only to find the train gone.
worse off(是badly off的比较级）穷的，缺少的
I am quite badly off recently.
better off (是well off 的比较级）富裕的，境况好的
