《Festivals around the world (Part 1)》
1.Festival are meant to celebrate important events.节日使用来庆祝一年中重要的时候的。
mean的用法归纳拓展:
1.mean to do 打算做或企图做.... I didn't mean to hurt you.
2.mean doing 意味着做... Being a stuent means studying hard.
3.mean sb. to do sth.“打算让某人做某事”,也可以用于被动语态中
I mean you to work as our spokesman.
4.be meant for;打算给与....;打算做...用
The magazine was meant for young girls.
5.What do/did you mean by...?你..是什么意思?
What do you mean by "education"?

mean 单复数相同(以复数形式出现),方式,方法
by all means 可以,当然行,没问题
by means of sth.借助...手段,依靠....方法
by no means 决不,一点也不(如用于居首,应部分倒装)
典型例题:
(2006重庆,24)I've tried very hard to improve English.But by no means(D) with my progress.
A The teacher is not satisfied B is the teacher not satisfied C the teacher is satisfied D is the teacher satisfied
此题的关键是词组“by no means".当否定副词或词组位于句首时,句子需倒装。
2.What they celebrate and what people do
celebrate 可作为及物和不及物动词,意为”庆祝“。
How did you celebrate May Day this year?
It's Dad's birthday today and we're going out for a meal to celebrate.
词语辨析:
celebrate与congratulate都与喜事有关,但后面接的宾语不同。
1)celebrate 表示”庆祝“,指以行动来庆祝生日、节日等
2)congratulate表示”祝贺“,指对个人经过努力获得成功的祝贺,后面只能接sb.常用
congratulate sb. on/upon sth./doing sth.口语中常用:congratulations
congratulate you on your promotion-----we must go out and celebrate.

①句中谓语动词的单复数由“books”确定。②句中的谓语动词由“kind”确定。
4.Most ancient festival would celebrate the end of cold winter,planting in spring and harvest in autumn.大多数古老的节日总是庆祝严寒的结束,春季的播种和秋季的收获。
would 用作情态动词,表示过去经常做某事,意为“总是,经常,往往”等,有时可与used to互换,但would 只能与表动态的动词连用。
When we worked in the same office,we would often have coffee together.
He used to have a green car but now he drives a black one.(不能用would)

6.Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors.有些节日是为了纪念死者,或者使祖先得以满足。
1.honour 1)光荣,荣誉(n)尊敬
They fight for the honour of the country.
One must show honour to one's parents.
2)in honour of 为了纪念
A festival is set in honour of the hero.
